The wedding tradition of gift giving is nearly as old as the institution of marriage itself. However, in the 15th century, a decorative “marriage chest” was filled with all the things a bride would need as a wife. After a few hundred years, this tradition made its way to the American South as a “hope chest,” in which a young woman would store linens and other clothes she would need once she became wife.
The creation of the wedding registry occurred in more recent history. The emphasis on gift giving shifted from the couple’s families to the guests themselves. Most likely, smaller stores and boutiques had their own personal versions of wedding registries by the start of the 20th century. As with registries today, shop owners would assist brides-to-be in selecting china, crystal, and silver patterns for their new homes and then guide friends and family in purchasing those items that were selected.
However, in 1924, the wedding registry was formed when Chicago department store Marshall Field’s (now known as Macy’s) established their first bridal registry inspiring similar chains to do the same. In 1935, Marshall Field’s even created a “Bride’s House” on its eighth floor which was a showroom replete with items to guide the young bride-to-be as she made her registry selections.
